This Side Up

vrijdag 31 mei, Theater Amsterdam, Holland Festival

Spel: Nienke & Jazz Botma, Doralice Covelli, Rick Groenendijk, Nina Haanappel, Iris Meerman, Hans Paape.
Concept: Diede Daalman, Hannegijs Jonker.

De makers liepen in 2018 stage bij Kentridge’s The Centre for the Less Good Idea in Johannesburg en geven dit jaar voor het Holland Festival diverse educatieve projecten vorm rondom The Head and The Load

Prior to William Kentridge’s opera The Head and The Load, the performance This Side Up will take place in the lobby of Theater Amsterdam. With this performance theatre makers Diede Daalman and Hannegijs Jonker, together with eight non-professional performers of different ages from Amsterdam, respond to the opera.

A pile of 150 boxes forms the starting point. This Side Up is about looking at and carrying history. Every box as a container of a fragment, a memory, a story. Every individual as a carrier of their own weight. The performance explores the impossible attempt to load everything onto your shoulders, the failing, the looking for balance.

The makers did an internship at Kentridge’s The Centre for the Less Good Idea in Johannesburg in 2018 and this year provide several educational projects around The Head and the Load for the Holland Festival.
